Arroyo del Cerezo

Arroyo del Cerezo

Aldea con ecosistema rico en flora diversa, senderos paisajísticos y restos arqueológicos de épocas íbera, romana y árabe, ideal para el turismo natural.

The hamlet of El Arroyo del Cerezo, situated beside the stream from which it takes its name, lies to the south of the municipality of Iznájar and consists of a small cluster of scattered houses and farmhouses, which are a clear example of traditional architecture.

Water is a constant feature in the settlements of the Iznájar region. Whilst the main settlement lies on the banks of the River Genil, on a high sandstone hill that gives it a strategic position, many hamlets have also sprung up alongside other smaller watercourses, tributaries of the Genil, such as the River de La Hoz, or the streams Solerche, Priego, Saucedilla, Adelantado, Gata, Cerezo and others.

In Arroyo del Cerezo, as in the other hamlets situated alongside the streams, one can appreciate a rich ecosystem in which the flora stands out at first glance, enriched by a wide variety of plants such as chickweed, plantain, psyllium, yellow and white irises, water lentils and water lilies, as well as poplars and reed beds. It was precisely the abundance of cherry trees along the stream’s banks that gave the village its name.

Along the path, which offers outstanding scenery and natural beauty as it follows the stream’s course, remains of pottery and other artefacts of archaeological significance from the Iberian, Roman and Arab periods have been found, clearly indicating the importance of the settlement for the local population, linked to the presence of the springs and the Arroyo del Cerezo itself.
