Parish of Saint Dominic of Guzmán

Parish of Saint Dominic of Guzmán

Templo con yeserías del crucero y retablo barroco. Alberga obras artísticas como el Cristo de la Sangre y esculturas de San José y San Marcos.

This former convent church of the Minims, or Victorians, was built on the site of a chapel dedicated to Saint Francis of Paola, which had been erected following a vow made by the town during the plague epidemic of 1680. Only the façade remains of the original chapel; the rest of the church was built in 1730 to a design by Fray Juan Rodríguez de Ocampo. Notable features include the plasterwork in the transept and the magnificent Baroque altarpiece, a work attributed to Francisco José Guerrero. Also of note are numerous works of art, such as the image of Cristo de la Sangre, of colonial origin and crafted from corn cobs and acacia wood; the carving of Saint Joseph, from the Granada workshop of José de Mora; and the image of Saint Mark attributed to the sculptor José de Medina. The formerConvent of San Francisco de Paula, attached to the church, was secularised in the 19th century and has since housed government offices, schools, Civil Guard barracks and, currently, a hotel.
